Charlene Carter Scholarship Fund

Charlene CarterDr. Charlene Carter, lovingly referred to as “Aunt Charlene”, knew from a very young age that she wanted to be a teacher and work with children. She began her 42-year journey in education at Stephen F. Austin University where she received her undergraduate and master’s degrees in Education. She then returned to the Houston area and started her teaching career. She subsequently earned a doctoral degree in Education from the University of Houston. For the last fourteen years, Dr. Carter has served as a professor at the University of Houston – Clear Lake, helping to educate and train our future educators.

In the early 1990s, she became involved with the Houston Children’s Chorus when her nephew, Charlie Pray, joined the choir. Through the last 24 years, she has continued to be a strong supporter of the Chorus and its development of strong, confident, successful young adults. She has planned and chaperoned numerous concerts and special events. Charlene was also able to feed her love of traveling by chaperoning, planning and preparing Chorus trips to Hong Kong, Russia, Italy, Japan, China, New York City, Galveston, Atlanta, Maine and New Mexico. She also served as a dedicated member of the board of directors for the Chorus for several years.

In addition to her teaching and Chorus activities, Charlene was an active member of Tallowood Baptist Church where she worked with children missions and bible study.

Charlene passed away on May 27, 2014, and in her memory, the Chorus has established the Charlene Carter Scholarship Fund. Any donations dedicated to this fund will go specifically to help those students for whom tuition is a burden, thus furthering Charlene’s legacy of education, support and service to the children of Houston and to the Chorus.
